August 20th: Mont Tremblant. It is finally here.
Over the last months I’ve kept you up-to-date on my goal to complete the Mont Tremblant Ironmanon August 20th. As I write this installment I am two weeks out from the 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike ride and 42.2 km run. The large 5, 6 and 7-hour training blocks ended last week. Going forward I’ll focus on smaller, higher intensity workouts to allow my body to rest up. There is no denying that there are competing feelings of anxiety and excitement in both my mind and body. My coach says that I have built up the required fitness. Still, I struggle mentally because I have yet to complete either the bike or run distance. I need to trust the plan.
For perspective, I look back on my first Half Ironman 4 years ago where I felt similar emotions. Was I nervous? Yes. Did I cross the start, and finish lines? Yes. And, one-month ago I participated in the same event for the third time and it felt like it was a normal training day. The tingly feelings are what you get by pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. I’m not sure anyone particularly likes them but they are what make us develop and grow.
My goal is quite uncomplicated and doesn’t hinge on time. I would like to enjoy the day, pass the finish line and have enough energy to play with my boys in the pool the following day.
I acknowledge that this has been a self-indulgent pursuit. Typically, being healthy means eating right, sleeping well and exercising or moving around most days of the week. My training program falls well beyond this and has, at times, overflowed into my family and friend space. I’ve tried to keep this to a minimum. Like our financial plans, we need to balance between planning and saving for the future and enjoying the moments that are around us today.
Beyond a bucket list check-mark for myself, I would like to take this achievement and turn it into something positive. I would like to raise funds for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. I am fortunate to have the health to even contemplate doing something like this. Not everyone does.
So, if you are able, join me in raising some funds. Assante and I will match each dollar you donate. A $20 personal donation can grow into $60 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Assante and I will contribute up to $1,000 each. Click here to donate.
Thank you for your genuine interest and encouragement. Wish me luck and I will share with you on the other side.
All the best,
August 08, 2017
