Most executors are rookies who are trying their best to figure out what they need to do to settle an estate. They are the brother, the sister, the adult child or the trusted friend of the deceased and may be stepping into a minefield. Generally, I have held that financial literacy, available time and geographical proximity should be the key characteristics of an executor. With estate litigation on the rise, the Insurance Journal suggests other qualities may be required.
