Securing your On-line Presence

With on-line security becoming more and more important I wanted to share a tool with you that we use to maintain our business and personal usernames and passwords – 1Password.  We don’t have to look far to see our potential on-line weakness when many of our passwords are predictable and unimaginative.  Annually, Splash Data puts together the top 25 used passwords.  This past year, they revealed that “123456” and “password” retained their top two spots on the list of passwords —for the fourth consecutive year.

They warn that the “use of any of the passwords on this list puts users at grave risk for identity theft.”  Cleaning up an identity theft is a project that none of us want.  Proactively, using a password manager like 1Password can greatly help minimize this risk.

Using 1Password allows us to have no usernames or passwords saved on our computer.  And, our passwords look like “%p:MGIm*T” instead of “starwars” (number #16 on the list of most used).

The software locks your usernames and passwords behind one robust password; that you determine.  Remember that password and you have access to all your passwords.

More than protecting your on-line identity it makes managing your user names and passwords effortless.  It does cost a few dollars a month, but I feel that it is a worthwhile investment to keep your on-line profile secure.

Have a look of the video.  I am not related to 1Password in any way – just a supportive user.
