On a non-descript Wednesday evening, Valerie remarked: “Isn’t your race in about a month?” And, though, I knew she was right I had to check Dr. Google to double check. The nervous energy in my body wanted more time but I know that I’ve done the heavy training and am ready for the half-Ironman on July 10th in Muskoka.
At this stage, I need to be more conscious and diligent around the non-training elements of my health and fitness: sleep and nutrition.
I’ve always been someone capable of ‘doing’. I rarely complain about a 3-hour bike ride at 4:30 am or having to run on a cold slushy sidewalk. At times, however, I struggle with ‘not doing’ – not having the Triscuits and cheese in the evening, foregoing a beer the night before a big training session or exercising when it might be better to take it easy and stretch. I feel that I need to go against my A-type nature to have a healthy race. Like many aspects of life, putting in the time and effort does not guarantee results. Intention and thoughtful execution does give us control and the best opportunity of achieving our goals. Interestingly, this same approach works for achieving our financial goals as well.
For the 4 weeks leading up to July 10th, I will keep track of the key drivers of my fitness: exercise, sleep, nutrition and stretching. I’ve taped a simple tracking table to my fridge to keep me honest. If I miss a check-mark my sons will invariably point it out and question me like a bandit.
I am healthy, happy and proud of my commitment to date. Thank you all for you interest and support. You help keep me focused and honest.
